Taghazout, Tamraght or Imsouane? The Honest Morocco Surf Guide (Luxury & Yoga Edition)
Share
Morocco has exploded in popularity. If you look at travel discussions on Reddit, everyone is asking the same question: "Should I stay in Taghazout, Tamraght, or drive up to Imsouane?"
While the winter months are famous for big swells, we see more and more surfers looking to visit in April, May, and June. The weather is warmer, the crowds are thinner, and the vibes are unmatched. But choosing the wrong village can leave you stuck in a noisy construction zone instead of a zen retreat.
We break down the coast, from the busy hubs to the windy city of Essaouira.
1. The Vibe Check: Taghazout vs. Tamraght
Taghazout is the beating heart. It’s where the legendary Anchor Point breaks. It’s bustling, filled with cafes, and walkable. However, it can be busy.
-
Go here for: Social vibes, cafes, and being right on the water.
Tamraght, just 5 minutes south, is the new "cool kid". It is quieter, slightly uphill (amazing views), and focuses heavily on Yoga and Luxury villas.
-
Go here for: Boutique riads, wellness retreats, and a more relaxed atmosphere.
2. The Magic Bay: Imsouane
Drive 1.5 hours north, and you find Imsouane. This is a world of its own. It is famous for "The Bay", one of the longest waves in the world. It is a longboarder's paradise. The vibe here is raw and sleepy. It’s all about surf, eat, sleep. If you want to disconnect completely, this is the place.
3. What about Essaouira?
Further north lies Essaouira. While beautiful for a cultural day trip or kite-surfing (it gets very windy), for pure surfing, we recommend sticking to the Taghazout or Imsouane zones for consistency.
4. Seasonality: Surfing in April, May & June
Is Morocco good in the spring? Yes. While December and January deliver giant barrels, April, May, and June are perfect for intermediates and longboarders. The swell drops in size, becoming friendly and fun, while the temperature rises. It is the perfect time for a luxury getaway without needing a thick wetsuit.
