Santa Teresa vs. Nosara: Which Costa Rica Town Matches Your Vibe?

Costa Rica is vast, and travel times between towns can be longer than expected. Choosing the wrong town can completely change the vibe of a trip. The two main hubs on the Nicoya Peninsula, Santa Teresa and Nosara, attract very different crowds.

Santa Teresa offers a raw, high-energy atmosphere. Built along a single dirt road next to the jungle, it feels intense and trendy. Expect to share the road with ATVs and a lively social scene. The waves are typically fast, hollow beach breaks, making it a favorite for intermediate to advanced surfers looking for a challenge and a party atmosphere.

Nosara (specifically Playa Guiones) is known as the polished, wellness-focused alternative. The roads are largely paved, yoga decks are common, and the rhythm is often early-to-bed, early-to-rise. The wave at Guiones is generally softer and friendlier than in Santa Teresa. It is widely considered a haven for longboarders and intermediates looking to improve without the intensity of heavier breaks.

For nightlife, heavier waves, and a jungle feel, Santa Teresa is the go-to. For luxury organic food, world-class yoga, and gentle peeling waves, Nosara is the better fit. Both destinations are premium, so budget accordingly.
